The Deity of the Holy Spirit
HOLY GHOST IS GOD
A profound change took place in my spiritual life when I
realized that the Holy Ghost was God. Millions of people - and I
was among them - are somehow brought up to believe that He is
less equal.....Jehovah is the name of the triune being - not the
name of just one of them. The Father is called Jehovah. The Son
is called Jehovah. The Holy Ghost is called Jehovah....The
moment that I realized that the Holy Spirit was God - and began
to worship Him and treat Him as God - my life began to change.
(Benny Hinn, GOOD MORNING HOLY SPIRIT, 1990 Thomas
Nelson, Pgs. 69-71)
HOLY SPIRIT IS CALLED GOD
1. (Acts 5:3-4 KJV) But Peter said, Ananias, why hath
Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to
keep back part of the price of the land? {4} Whiles it
remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was
it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this
thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto
God.
HE IS OMNIPRESENT
2. (Psalms 139:7-10 KJV) Whither shall I go from thy
spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? {8} If I
ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in
hell, behold, thou art there. {9} If I take the wings of the
morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; {10}
Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall
hold me.
HE IS ETERNAL
3. (Hebrews 9:14 KJV) How much more shall the blood of
Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself
without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works
to serve the living God?
The Personality of the Holy Spirit
HOLY SPIRIT IS A PERSON
It is impossible to rightly understand the work of the
Holy Spirit, or to get into right relation with the Holy
Spirit Himself and thus know His blessed work in our own
souls, without first coming to know the Holy Spirit as a
person. (R. A. Torrey, THE HOLY SPIRIT, who He is and as
a person, Flemming H. Revell, P. 11)
PERSONAL PRONOUNS ARE USED TO DESCRIBE THE HOLY SPIRIT
4. (John 14:16 KJV) And I will pray the Father, and he
shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you
for ever;
The Sins Against the Holy Ghost
HOLY GHOST IS A PERSON WHO CAN BE SINNED AGAINST
Blasphemy
5. (Matthew 12:31 KJV) Wherefore I say unto you, All manner
of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the
blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.
Grieved
6. (Isaiah 63:10 KJV) But they rebelled, and vexed his holy
Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought
against them.
7. (Ephesians 4:30 KJV) And grieve not the holy Spirit of
God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
Insulted
8. (Hebrews 10:29 NKJV) Of how much worse punishment, do you
suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of
God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was
sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace?
Resisted
9. (Acts 7:51 KJV) Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart
and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers
did, so do ye.
Quenched
10. (1 Thessalonians 5:19 KJV) Quench not the Spirit.
To think of the Holy Spirit as simply a power from God is to
fall into a form of idolatry; it is to ask, "How can I get
the Holy Spirit and use it?" God would this be a power to
be selfishly manipulated. (William M. Greathouse, THE
FULLNESS OF THE SPIRIT, 1958 Beacon Hill Press, Kansas City,
Missouri, P. 55)
The Holy Spirit is the Voice of God
HOLY SPIRIT IS A PERSON WHO SPEAKS
The Holy Spirit is the one who communicates heaven into your
heart. He is the voice of God to you. You say, "Well, I
know it was God speaking to me." Of course it was God. It
was God the Holy Spirit. To put it another way, it is the
Father, through the Son, speaking by the Holy Spirit. (Benny
Hinn, GOOD MORNING HOLY SPIRIT, 1990 Thomas Nelson, P.
70)
11. (Acts 8:29 KJV) Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go
near, and join thyself to this chariot.
12. (Acts 10:19 KJV) While Peter thought on the vision, the
Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee.
13. (Acts 13:2 KJV) As they ministered to the Lord, and
fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for
the work whereunto I have called them.
THE HOLY SPIRIT IS STILL SPEAKING TO THE CHURCH
14. (Revelation 2:7 KJV) He that hath an ear, let him
hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that
overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is
in the midst of the paradise of God.
15. (Revelation 2:11 KJV) He that hath an ear, let him
hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that
overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.
16. (Revelation 2:29 KJV) He that hath an ear, let him
hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.
17. (Revelation 3:6 KJV) He that hath an ear, let him
hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.
18. (Revelation 3:13 KJV) He that hath an ear, let him
hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.
19. (Revelation 3:22 KJV) He that hath an ear, let him
hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.
Other Scriptures That Will Help Us to Think of the Holy Ghost
as a Person
HE INTERCEEDS
20. (Romans 8:26 NKJV) Likewise the Spirit also helps in
our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for
as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for
us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
This passage gives me hope that, when I’ve come to the
end of myself and don’t even know how to express my
prayer, the Holy Spirit will come to my aid and assist me by
praying both for me and through me....groaning is not a very
sophisticated way to pray....It is only when the desperation
factor exceeds our embarrassment factor that we are open to
a new work from God....Does this passage in Romans, chapter
8, speak of praying in tongues? It seems to me that this
passage would include the ability to pray in tongues, but it
doesn’t describe that experience exclusively. (Dudley
Hall, INCENSE AND THUNDER, 1999 Multnoamah
Publishers, Pgs. 188,189-191)
HE HAS A MIND
21. (Romans 8:27 NKJV) Now He who searches the hearts
knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes
intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
HE IS THE AUTHOR OF SCRIPTURE
22. (2 Peter 1:21 KJV) For the prophecy came not in old
time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they
were moved by the Holy Ghost.
23. (2 Samuel 23:2 KJV) The spirit of the LORD spake by
me, and his word was in my tongue.
HE CONVICTS PEOPLE OF SIN
24. (John 16:8 NKJV) "And when He has come, He will
convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of
judgment:
Neither you no I can convince any man of sin. As we shall
see later, the Holy Spirit uses us to do the work, that is,
He does the work through us, but we of ourselves cannot do
it. He must do it. (R. A. Torrey, THE HOLY SPIRIT, Who He
is and What He Does, Flemming H. Revell, P. 42)
HE REGENERATES
25. (Titus 3:5 KJV) Not by works of righteousness which
we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the
washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
HE INDWELLS CHRISTIANS
26. (1 Corinthians 3:16 KJV) Know ye not that ye are the
temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
27. (1 Corinthians 6:19 KJV) What? know ye not that your
body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which
ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
28. (Romans 8:9 KJV) But ye are not in the flesh, but in
the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you.
Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of
his.
HE GUIDES AND LEADS
29. (John 16:13 KJV) Howbeit when he, the Spirit of
truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he
shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear,
that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come.
30. (Romans 8:14 KJV) For as many as are led by the
Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
HE ASSURES US OF SALVATION
31. (Romans 8:16 KJV) The Spirit itself beareth witness
with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
The testimony of the Spirit is an inward impression on
the soul, whereby the Spirit of God directly witnesses to my
spirit, that I am a child of God; that Jesus Christ hath
loved me, and given himself for me; and that all my sins are
blotted out, and I, even I, am reconciled to God. (John
Wesley, WESLEY’S WORKS, 1986 Baker Book House, P.
115, Volume 5)
